Stay on track this winter

When it’s cold and rainy outside, it can be so tempting to cosy up in front of Netflix. But, this time of year is a great time to get moving – especially as we all need to focus even more on our health and being outdoors due to COVID-19. In this blog, the KBPT team helps you to banish the workout blues and stay motivated this winter with five things to focus on.

1. Aim high

We’re big fans of goals – exercise goals, healthy eating goals, life goals... So, how about setting yourself a few targets for this winter and using a fitness app to keep an eye on your progress. Maybe you could tick off a couch to 5k before Christmas? Cut out sugary snacks for a month? Or nail your warrior pose before your next online yoga class?

2. Layer up

There’s nothing more miserable than getting chilly and soaked while you’re out exercising. Make sure you’re wearing the right gear – choose material that wicks away moisture and go for several layers (including a waterproof jacket) that you can remove as you warm up. If you’re out after dark, it’s a good idea to wear reflective clothing.

3. Look around

This can be a beautiful time of the year... the changing leaves, the morning mist, the frost on the grass. While you’re out for your walk, run or bike ride, take a moment to enjoy the world around you. If you’re in east London, why not visit Victoria Park or Walthamstow Marshes? Or, if you fancy going further afield, how about Epping Forest or Richmond Park?

4. Buddy up

Friends make everything more fun plus it’s never a bad idea to have a bit of healthy competition. Whether you run together, cycle together or take a class together, you’ll be able to spur each other on. And if you throw in Strava, we’re sure you’ll see your commitment levels soar.

5. Dive in

For the brave among you, how about trying something completely new? Like cold water swimming. You can do it in lots of places around London, including Hampstead Ponds and London Fields Lido, and it’s good for your circulation, your immune system and even your mental health. From brrrrr to brilliant in just a few strokes!
