Five of the Best Bike Rides in London

Five of the best bike rides in London

If, like us, you’re sick of staring at the same four walls, why not get out on your bike this month? You’re currently allowed to leave your home to exercise once a day in your local area. We’re big fans of cycling here at KBPT so we thought we’d share some of our favourite bike rides in London. Fresh air, time in nature and that post-exercise glow – what’s not to love?

Before you set off, you might like to read these cycling in lockdown tips from British Cycling . As they say, it’s important that you stay local for now, wrap up warm and come back smiling!

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

Want to get inspired where Sir Chris Hoy, Jason Kenny and Laura Trott wowed the crowds and took home Gold in 2012? Starting at the VeloPark, there’s an accessible cycling route that takes you along rivers and canals and past many of the iconic Olympic venues, including the Copper Box, the Aquatics Centre and the ArcelorMittal Orbit.

Epping Forest

If you’re lucky enough to live near this ancient woodland, it’s a fantastic place to explore by bike. 2,400 hectares are at your disposal, offering 284km of trails for both beginners and more experienced cyclists. Keep an eye out for muntjac deer and other wildlife while you’re there!

Islington

Those of you who call this part of north London home might like to head to Highbury Fields for a sub-10 mile route around the local area. Cycle past the Emirates Stadium then through the Ecology Park and Finsbury Park before whizzing past the old Highbury Stadium on the way back. Be prepared for some hills (and some mud!) on this route.

Richmond Park

With its wide open spaces and flat roads, Richmond Park is a cyclist’s paradise. The Tamsin Trail, a seven mile loop of the park, is a great option – starting at Pembroke Lodge, you’ll pass the Isabella Plantation and White Lodge (which featured in the Billy Elliot film). Top tip: most cyclists go anti-clockwise around the park to make the mini-roundabouts easier.

Greenwich

If you’re looking for a traffic-free bike ride, how about cycling along the Thames Path from Greenwich Pier? Take in the sights of the Cutty Sark, the Old Royal Naval College and the Royal Observatory. Ideally, you’d then head to one of the historic pubs nearby but, for now, you’ll have to make do with your own refreshments.

If you’re training for a longer bike ride or a triathlon, KBPT can design a personal training programme just for you. Email [email protected] for an informal chat.
