Blog: The importance of a good nights sleep.

Getting a good nights sleep is just as important as exercising and eating well.  Poor sleep is strongly linked to weight gain, so if you are looking to loose weight a decent nights sleep is vital.  Sleep is important for various aspects of our brain function this is includes cognition, concentration, productivity and performance.  Getting enough sleep also keeps your immune system strong.  Studies have shown those getting 7-8 hours sleep a night are at less risk of getting heart disease or a stroke.  Poor sleep habits are also strongly linked to adverse effects on blood sugar in the general population.  Those sleeping less than six hours per night have repeatedly been shown to be at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.  Poor sleep is also linked to depression and reduces your ability to interact socially.

If you are struggling to get a good nights sleep here is some tips you can try:

  • Don't consume caffeine late in the day

  • Exercise during the day

  • Try to go to bed and wake up at consistent times

  • Try to relax before bed by having a bath or reading a book

  • Reduce blue light exposure from electronic devices in the evening

  • Optimize your bedroom environment and make sure your bed is comfy

  • Don't eat late in the evening

  • Be smart about what you are eating and drinking throughout the day
